Fake Websites

13 November, 2023

Welcome to International Fraud Awareness Week: Day One focusing on fake websites.

Fraudsters often create fake websites and advertisements to trick unsuspecting individuals into providing their debit card information. Once you enter your details or provide a One Time Passcode (OTP) to authenticate a purchase, these criminals now have access to your card details and can misuse your hard-earned money.

To help you navigate the internet safely, here are some tips on how to identify fake online retailers and protect your debit card details:

Check for the ‘padlock’ symbol:

This symbol in the address bar or browser typically indicates that the site is encrypted, meaning your activity cannot be intercepted. However, remember that fraudsters can replicate these symbols, so it’s not a fail-safe guarantee of a website’s legitimacy.

Examine the website carefully:

Look out for grammar mistakes, typos, or unprofessional design. Check if they have a registered business address and a clear returns policy. Are there positive reviews on Google or other online forums? If anything seems off, refrain from making a purchase.

Review their social media and contact information:

Genuine businesses will have legitimate posts and a significant following. Do they provide a physical phone number and email address? Try calling or emailing them to check their responsiveness. Be wary if you receive an automated response or if your email bounces back, as these could be signs of a fraudulent website.

TIP: Always use trusted websites when shopping or transacting online. If a deal seems too good to be true, trust your instincts—it’s likely a scam.
